Don’ t hesitate to try "Chohlious" (snails) that are fried and boiled, "ntakos" which is dried bread coated with olive oil and crushed tomato, "kolokythokeftedes" , fried zuchini patties, "xygalo" which is a kind sour milk, and "gamopilafo".The tastes generate from the simplicity of the dishes and the freshness of the ingredients is a real pleasure. Also don’t hesitate to try a dish of local Sitia olives. Besides all these local dishes, try the famous greek salad (horiatiki).
Also be aware that just about every home in Crete produces its own raki, which is a strong alcoholic drink made of the grapes harvested in mid-August.It is usually taken in a small shot glass in small sips,and its potency varies from home to home. It is usually served with slices of cucumber,bread and xygalo (sour milk), and chohlious.
Beaches
While in Crete , visiting the beaches of the island is a must. Crete , is an island where everything seems to be done for a reason , and that is why you will undoubtedly find something that best suites you. For those who like trendy crowds Vai or Elunda are your best options , and those of you who are funs of the youthful crowds and night life Hersonnisos is ideal for them were the numerous bars and clubs by the sea will take your breath away! .With a spectacular coast weaving around the island, those who yearn for isolation can find their own beach to enjoy. Matala is also an interesting beach because of the history and the dramatic cave tombs that tower above it. In Crete , you will be amazed by the diversity of the scenery and the deep blue colour of the sea that will cast a spell on you forever.
